KCB backs solar project at Alliance High School as institution marks 100 years

KCB Bank Kenya has reinforced its push for clean energy adoption in the education sector by backing a solarization project unveiled at the centenary celebrations of Alliance High School.

The project launched at an event attended by President William Ruto underlines the growing national emphasis on sustainable infrastructure and climate-conscious development in public institutions.

The solar installation is set to improve energy reliability at the school, reduce electricity costs and cut its carbon footprint, positioning the century-old institution as a model for climate-smart learning environments.

KCB Bank Kenya Managing Director Annastacia Kimtai indicated that the lender is using structured financing models to unlock greater investment in renewable energy.

“KCB is leveraging its financial expertise to de-risk clean energy lending and provide flexible financing solutions that make solar adoption sustainable and inclusive, particularly for learning institutions,” said Kimtai.

KCB says the project aligns with its broader Clean Energy Customer Value Proposition, a framework devised to hasten renewable energy uptake across households, SMEs, agribusinesses and institutions.

The Kenyan financial institution revealed that it combines financing, advisory support and tailored funding models to lower barriers to entry for green energy investments.

KCB currently offers four clean energy solutions for schools and institutions:

  • solar-powered cooking systems that also support lighting and equipment during non-cooking hours
  • steam-based cooking integrated with solar energy
  • LPG for clean cooking alongside solar installations
  • biogas systems that convert organic waste into energy

Through this initiative, the school will access flexible financing and expert support to adopt renewable energy solutions including solar lighting, hybrid cooking systems, LPG clean cooking, and biogas technology.

To date, the bank has financed more than 250 schools with solar and LPG facilities, signaling growing demand for cost-efficient and climate-resilient infrastructure in the education sector.

The Alliance High School installation highlights how renewable energy can support operational efficiency while contributing to Kenya’s broader climate goals.

With ever-increasing energy costs and increased pressure to reduce carbon emissions, institutions are now turning to structured green financing to future-proof their operations.
