Absa Bank Kenya honoured for driving over Sh2 billion in green building finance

Absa Bank Kenya has received top recognition as the Best Bank in Green Financing during the Kenya Green Building Society (KGBS) Annual Conference & Green Expo 2025, earning praise for its sustained contribution to Kenya’s transition toward environmentally responsible development.

The award underscores the bank’s continued investment in sustainable financing, particularly in supporting green building and energy-efficient housing. According to the organisers, Absa’s consistent commitment to eco-conscious lending has positioned it as a key contributor to Kenya’s green economy.

Reflecting on the honour, Charles Wokabi, who serves as the Vice President and Head of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs at Absa, explained that the recognition mirrors the bank’s deliberate strategy to make sustainability part of its business model.

He explained that the institution has prioritised environmentally conscious lending as part of its long-term agenda.

“Green building is a key part of our green financing agenda and we remain committed towards supporting communities, individuals and businesses transition to more climate resilient and energy efficient homes,” Wokabi stated.

“As part of this commitment, we have channelled over Sh2 billion towards green building financing.”

This commitment has been evident through several initiatives, among them the Eco Home Loan introduced earlier this year.

The product, the first of its kind in Kenya, allows borrowers to access up to 110 per cent financing to construct or improve homes that meet green standards.

It supports features such as solar energy installations, inverters, eco-friendly construction materials, and water purification and recycling systems, all aimed at helping Kenyans build homes that are both modern and sustainable.

The KGBS Annual Conference & Green Expo brings together key voices from government, business, and civil society to promote climate-smart infrastructure and environmentally conscious real estate practices.

The event also highlights Kenya’s growing role as a regional leader in sustainable tourism, green construction, and cultural preservation.

By securing this distinction, Absa Bank Kenya reaffirms its place among institutions shaping the country’s environmental future, not only through recognition but through tangible investment in the transition toward a greener economy.
